The Importance of Uncomfortable Emotions in Your Career

The Lows Inform The Highs.

Have you found yourself feeling overwhelmed, stuck, frustrated, or any other uncomfortable emotion when it comes to your job?

I think we can all say yes to that.

Did you know that those moments were just as important as the times when you felt proud, accomplished, and content in your job?

They are.

And because they are uncomfortable, we have a tendency to villainize them. We see them as life-long sentences, and sometimes use them as a reason to punish ourselves.

But when we can understand that those feelings serve a purpose, it makes it easier to face them, sit with them, explore them, and eventually learn from them.

This is an essential part of EMOTIONAL REGULATION. And emotional regulation is ESSENTIAL for having a thriving career, as I discuss in my Intuitive Career Mentorship.

In the fast-paced world of careers and professional growth, it's easy to overlook our emotional well-being. We often prioritize productivity, goals, and success over our own emotional health. However, it's essential to recognize that our emotions are powerful indicators of our inner state and can significantly impact our career trajectory.

Let's talk about the importance of listening to your uncomfortable emotions during your career journey.

Understanding Emotions in the Workplace:

Before we explore the significance of uncomfortable emotions, it's essential to understand emotions in the workplace.

Emotions are a natural part of being human, and they don't stop at the office door. They can range from joy and excitement to frustration, fear, and even anger. Acknowledging these emotions is the first step in dealing with them constructively.

Emotions as Signals:

Uncomfortable emotions are not nuisances; they are signals from your inner self. Just like physical pain alerts you to potential injuries, emotional discomfort informs you of issues that need attention. Ignoring these signals can lead to burnout, job dissatisfaction, and long-term negative effects on your career.

Self-Awareness and Emotional Intelligence:

Listening to your uncomfortable emotions fosters self-awareness, a cornerstone of emotional intelligence. When you acknowledge and understand your emotions, you become better equipped to manage them effectively. This self-awareness not only benefits you but also your colleagues and superiors, as it can lead to improved communication and teamwork.

Identifying Underlying Issues:

Uncomfortable emotions often mask deeper issues or unmet needs. For example, feelings of inadequacy may indicate a need for skill development or a change in job responsibilities. By addressing these underlying issues, you can proactively improve your career path and personal well-being.

Preventing Burnout:

You want to LOVE your job. One of the most significant risks of neglecting uncomfortable emotions is burnout. When you continuously suppress stress, anxiety, or frustration, it can build up over time and lead to severe burnout. Burnout not only harms your career but also your physical and mental health. Listening to your emotions can help you identify burnout symptoms early and take action to prevent it.

Decision-Making and Career Choices:

Emotions play a vital role in decision-making. When you listen to your emotions, you can make choices that align with your values and long-term goals. Suppressing uncomfortable emotions, on the other hand, may lead to impulsive decisions or staying in situations that don't serve your best interests.

Seeking Support:

Sometimes, uncomfortable emotions can become overwhelming, and it's crucial to seek support. This might involve talking to a mentor, therapist, or trusted friend. Remember that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness, and can be a game-changer in your career journey.

So when you inevitably feel the difficult emotions associated with your job, thank yourself first for paying attention. Validate your feelings - of course you'd be upset about this! And reassure yourself that you have always figured it out before, and you always will.

Give yourself permission to express those difficult emotions in constructive ways so they can talk to you - paint, journal, do a fire cleansing ritual.

Emotions are valuable signals that can guide you toward a more fulfilling and successful career. By acknowledging, understanding, and addressing your uncomfortable emotions, you'll not only improve your own well-being but also enhance your ability to navigate the complex world of work with resilience and emotional intelligence. So, don't silence those uncomfortable emotions; listen to them, and let them guide you toward a brighter career path.
